BabyAlienButterfly! charcoal on paper, A1

📍 London/West Midlands

The self lies at an axis within my practice - a point of exploration that is constantly being pulled between the artificial and the organic, the natural and the alien. At one extreme, ideas concerning the abject have led to my experimentations with merging the human body with the alien; with much of my practice specifying the motif of the fetal. This motif emerged as my visuals of aliens began to morph into ‘baliens’: hybrids of the baby and the alien. Which evolved from the odd ambiguity that can be perceived between these images. This has since driven my intrigue to play and experiment between the boundaries of the innate and that which is foreign, external or distant. Though the alienation of the self frames my interrogation of the body from a biological point of view, my work has also been looking at the body from the perspective of the otherworldly and the unknown. This has been explored mostly through my drawings, many of which speculate the fusion of the pelvis bone and the butterfly. Like the fetal, human bone structures have been another innate element  that I have been pushing and prodding with the otherly. Once again, there is an odd ambiguity between these visuals. When working initially with the pelvis bone, I began to notice the soft echoing of the butterfly; the speculation for possible hybridisations have been a great driving force for much of my practice. In terms of process, my exploration also stems from my uncanny process of working with bodily mediums such as silicone (squish inners), metal (imposter!) skin (latex) and blood (juice).
